This artical rates protection for your computer based off of how the software actually works.
Not by particular user experience with the software!
(this article describs how well you're protected with the software you use)
I can't exactly give a rating as I write this as I don't know much about how well a particular service protects you.
(I don't know how much these companies know about particular viruses to be able to list how good they are)
but for my knowledge I do have, I can rate this:
top (Best so far):
[glow=none]
Vipre (free with lifetime key (I havn't been able to get it working and have to wipe and reinstall this software))
This antivirus is known to catch pretty much everything known about and is rated THE BEST antivirus.
The active protection is better than Comodo, with a built in FireWall with HIPS.
Though with my experience, my computer now freezes as if disconnecting the C drive,
and pograms tend to hang, freeze, or crash.
Comodo
There's actually a slew of protection here AV+FW+IS (like Vipre, but split up), as well as browsers based off chrom and firefox.
I can't verify it protects you from everything, though the browsers protect you from quite a slew of the threats (more than Avast), as well as the DNS used blocks you from most harmful sites (you will need add-ons to protect you from trackers and ads).
The AV catches more than Avast with a scan, where the FW comes with HIPS (like Vipre) to allow you to verify running processes and actions taken by them.
My experience with the active protection is it DOES cause a few programs to hang here and there,
and doesn't catch things placed on the desktop like Avast or Vipre.
Avast
Active protection better than Comodo, but only protects you from about 1/3rd of the threats out there.
I've argued with a computer salesman who's (not sure how old) military knowledge rated Avast as 3rd worst protection.
(I don't have details or anything further on this as I argued more about the MS RAT with him, which he didn't know about)
My experience with Avast is it does hog system resource (RAM) though it doesn't cause programs to hang or crash.
[/glow]my recommendation:
use Vipre only for scans while using Comodo for it's FW and HIPS, and Avast for Active Protection,
though I do recommend to scan with all 3 as one software might know about a virus the others don't.
[glow=none]
user experience with other AV Software:
Norton
known to be a resource hog.
McAfee
known to be a resource hog and not protect you from alot.
AVG
doesn't protect you from much and corrupts itself and your computer.
my experience here is it caused a Win98 computer to BSoD before you could get on your desktop.
(you could terminate the AVG process to continue to the desktop before it BSoD'd)
Kaspersky
users say it works well
not sure how much it protects you from
BitDefender
another one that works well
NOD32
havn't heard too much here
SpyBot Search and Destroy
havn't heard too much here
MS Security Essentials
havn't heard too much here
it's Microsoft though, don't expect much protection from them
(MS is just plain bad at everything, and has gotten worse since Bill Gates retired)
[/glow]
for even more information to help you stay secure and protected,
I've written a rant about MS and what they've done with Windows recently:
